TUFF-FLEX VNA™ Test Cables Offer Durability and Phase Stability for Precision Measurements up to 40 GHz

ConductRF has introduced TUFF-FLEX VNA™ Test Cables, a ruggedized family of precision RF test cable assemblies engineered to address critical mechanical durability and electrical stability requirements while remaining flexible for dynamic RF and microwave vector network analyzer (VNA) test environments.

Part of ConductRF’s recently introduced family of True VNA RF Test Cables, TUFF-FLEX VNA™ Test Cables are uniquely designed for applications where the test cable must withstand frequent handling, flexing and other physical demands of production and laboratory environments without compromising measurement confidence.

Current standardized TUFF-FLEX VNA™ cable configurations provide phase stability of ±2°, with specified phase change with flex as low as ±3° at maximum frequency and amplitude stability of ±0.10 dB.

The combination of durability and electrical stability is significant because mechanical protection has limited measurement value if routine movement of the cable introduces unacceptable electrical variation. Conversely, exceptional electrical performance provides limited long-term value in a high-use test environment if repeated handling damages or changes the physical structure responsible for that performance.

TUFF-FLEX VNA™ is engineered to address both sides of that equation.

Built for the Realities of Repeated VNA Testing

In VNA measurements, the cable assembly is part of the measurement system. Movement, repositioning, connector wear, bending and other mechanical stresses can affect phase, amplitude and overall measurement repeatability.

This becomes particularly important in production test, engineering laboratories, qualification testing and other environments where test cables may be connected, disconnected and repositioned repeatedly throughout the day.

TUFF-FLEX VNA™ Cables combine a flexible RF cable construction with rugged mechanical protection intended to help maintain electrical performance throughout repeated use. High crush resistance further distinguishes the TUFF-FLEX design for environments where test cables may be exposed to substantially greater mechanical stress than would normally be expected for a precision laboratory cable.

The result is a test cable designed not simply to survive demanding use, but to continue supporting the repeatable measurements expected from modern VNA systems.

A Different Approach to Selecting VNA Test Cables

TUFF-FLEX VNA™ is one of three distinct ConductRF true VNA test cable families developed to give engineers a more application-focused choice rather than treating every precision test environment as having the same requirements.

TUFF-FLEX VNA™ emphasizes ruggedness, durability and stable electrical performance for demanding environments up to 40 GHz.

HI-FLEX VNA™ emphasizes maneuverability and low flex force for precision measurements up to 70 GHz.

APEX VNA™ extends ConductRF’s precision VNA test capability to millimeter-wave applications up to 120 GHz, including 1.0 mm interfaces.

Together, the three product families allow engineers to select a cable based not simply on frequency and connector type, but on how the cable will actually be used within the measurement environment.

The standardized product families also complement ConductRF’s broader custom and rapidly tailored RF cable assembly capabilities. Customers requiring a configuration outside the standard range can work directly with ConductRF to evaluate cable construction, connectors, length, frequency, mechanical requirements and other application-specific considerations.

Understanding Phase Stability in VNA Test Cables

As VNA measurements become more demanding, cable selection increasingly requires engineers to look beyond frequency range and insertion loss.

Phase stability with flex can be particularly important because moving or repositioning a cable after calibration can introduce measurement uncertainty. The magnitude of that change—and how consistently the cable returns to its previous electrical state—can help distinguish a general-purpose RF test cable from a cable engineered specifically for demanding VNA measurements.

ConductRF has developed additional technical guidance addressing phase stability in True VNA test cables, including how phase-change specifications should be interpreted and how engineers can recognize the difference between good and exceptional performance.
